Vision for Ward 2
While talking with neighbors throughout Ward 2, a few topics come up over and over again which have influenced my developing platform
-
A Sense of Community
From my experience, I have learned the best way to get to know people is by working with them. For this reason, I plan to utilize a system of neighborhood committees to encourage involvement. By providing opportunity, we can develop future leaders within the community and foster innovative ideas. I can’t solve all these problems alone – it takes a team approach. I will be your champion of ideas, but these solutions need to have buy-in from the grass roots level.
-
Environment
Offering educational programs, run by experts in the field, about planting native trees/plants, reducing use of harmful insecticides, and monitoring water quality. I will work with city and county officials to monitor our creeks and rivers and push for developers to be held accountable for storm run-off and silting caused by construction near our waterways. I also want to seek grant programs to replant trees lost in recent storms to create a denser tree canopy.
-
Walkability & Bike-ability
Improving walking routes by adding crosswalks, signage and sidewalks. Additionally, improving bike paths and marking roads for easier, safer sharing with automobiles.
-
Traffic
Route 50 spill-over traffic has crippled our neighborhoods; we need to work on signage to keep drivers on Route 50 on high-traffic days. We also have several dangerous intersections that need to be addressed to make our streets safer and more navigable. This includes adding sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes and addressing speed limits.
-
Recreation Areas
With the nearly $500,000 park being constructed on the water’s edge in the Clay Street neighborhood, we need to have a basketball court installed. Residents have been asking for this for over a decade and it’s time for the city to deliver. At one time, Clay Street had a legendary basketball program – this needs to be revived. we also need to look at playgrounds and making them safe for all children.
-
Dog Park
Four years ago, a dog park was promised in Ward 2 but was never completed. I’d like to revisit this project. I plan to appoint a committee of residents to explore suitable areas within the ward. Once a few locations are identified, we will work with Recreation and Parks to build this new park.
-
Public Safety
Reducing crime by requiring police officers to walk their beat in higher crime areas. Additionally, we need to organize new and revitalize old Neighborhood Watch programs in Ward 2. For example, at one time Admiral Heights had a strong program that led to a number of solved crimes. We need to re-launch and expand this under-utilized program.
-
Neighborhood Gardens
In some neighborhoods, there is not enough room for even a vegetable garden on their property. I will organize a committee to review options for locations for community gardens. Seek partnerships with organizations such as Grow Annapolis to organize and maintain plots. Additionally, explore the use of pots to plant vegetables on decks, porches or patios.
-
Improve Water Access
I recently learned that much of the College Creek shoreline is owned by Anne Arundel County. The city should work to form a partnership with the County to develop this area for new water access points for the community
-
Traffic Calming
Speeding needs to be curtailed through speed cameras, traffic calming devices and narrower streets. I recommend that each community organize committees of stakeholders to provide mutually agreed upon solutions. The city should also publish the process for neighborhoods to successfully lobby for solutions.
-
Noise and Light Pollution
The city should request that the State Highway Administration plant more trees and explore the construction of more barriers to reduce the noise from Route 50. We need to work with NAAA to manage Navy Stadium public address system volume, as well as reduce light pollution generated from Navy Stadium lights left on when no events are occurring.
-
Expand the Main Streets Program
Working with the City I hope to expand the Main Streets Program - a program designed to revitalize older and historic commercial districts.
